Gamma-Ray Evidence Suggests Ancient Mars Had Oceans

Published November 18, 2008, 4:02 pm, SpaceDaily

An international team of scientists who analyzed data from the Gamma Ray Spectrometer onboard NASA's Mars Odyssey reports new evidence for the controversial idea that oceans once covered about a third of ancient Mars. "We compared Gamma Ray Spectrometer data on potassium, thorium and iron above and below a shoreline believed to mark an ancient ocean that covered a third of Mars' surface ...

  • China's Candus could recycle uranium: AECL has a deal with Third Qinshan, China North Nuclear Fuel Corp and the Nuclear Power Institute of China to use uranium recovered from used PWR nuclear fuel for Qinshan 3 and 4. (This follows an earlier AECL/NPIC research deal.) Qinshan 3 and 4 are CANDUs that run on natural uranium fuel. They differ from most of China's PWR nuclear fleet running on low-enriched uranium (about 5% U-235). ..Uranium recovered from used PWR nuclear remains slightly enriched (about 1.6% U-235), with heightened radioactivity. South Korea has pursued similar goals. Dupic (Direct Use of PWR fuel in Candu) envisages PWR fuel pellets broken up, heated to drive off fission products, then reformed for Candu fuel. It is not known whether China includes other processing. Ukraine is doing similar work. AECL has studied the use of thorium in Candus, avoiding uranium altogether, for over 45 years, with promising results. Uranium is already the cheapest fuel, even with enrichment, thorium would be cheaper still.
