- State: Time to ban the bug bomb -- Page 1 -- Times Union - Albany NY: Bugs may soon have a little less reason to fear "Da Bomb." Citing concerns over injuries and accidents caused by people who use pesticide foggers, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said Friday it will ban sales of the devices beyond licensed pest exterminators. From 2001 to 2006, there were 123 cases of bug bomb-related illness or injury in the state, with almost half of those happening in New York City, according to DEC figures included in an eight-state study released Friday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- State may restrict sale of bug bombs' : State : The Buffalo News: New York state is moving to take ?bug bombs? off store shelves after a federal report noted misuse of the indoor foggers can cause explosions and illness. State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Pete Grannis said Friday the agency will start classifying the foggers as a restricted- use product when their pesticide registrations come up for review shortly. That means only certified pesticide applicators will be able to get them. A report published Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted 466 illnesses or injuries related to indoor foggers in eight states ? including 123 in New York ? between 2001 and 2006. Most were described as minor and attributed to using too many foggers or not leaving the room.

- 5-day week upsets officers -- Page 1 -- Times Union - Albany NY: But the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is going in the other direction. Approximately 300 park police officers were told they'll be working five eight-hour days per week even though many have worked a four-day, 10-hour-per-da y schedule for a long time. A main reason, the agency said, is the need to cut overtime for officers who make court appearances or attend training sessions during their third day off. The agency's Chief of Law Enforcement Richard O'Donnell said the four-day weeks caused more overtime to insure coverage when officers were on vacation, injured or on sick leave. "We need to reduce costs," O'Donnell said, explaining park police schedules vary according to seasons and days of the week, with more need during the summer and weekends. Overtime costs totaled $3.9 million during the 2007-2008 fiscal year.
