The following information is about Hazardous Waste.

Hazardous Waste Defined

A solid waste or combination of solid wastes that, because of quantity, concentration or physical, chemical or infectious characteristics, may cause or significantly contribute to an increase in mortality or an increase in serious, irreversible, or incapacitating reversible illness or pose a substantial hazard to human health or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported, disposed, or otherwise managed. About 290 million tons of hazardous wastes are generated in the U.S. each year. About 4 percent is recycled. The rest is treated, stored or disposed. Of the hzardous wastes disposed, most are injected as a liquid into the ground in specially designed injection wells, a large quantity is placed in surface impoundments (pits, ponds and lagoons), and a small portion is placed directly on the land or buried.
