Environmental Toxins > Gamma Rays
The following information is about Gamma Rays.
Gamma Rays Defined
Penetrating electromagnetic waves or rays emitted from nuclei during radioactive decay, similar to x-rays. Dense materials such as concrete and lead are used to provide shielding against gamma radiation.
This definition is in context to Environmental Toxins. See more contextual defintions for Gamma Rays.
New Nano Satellite Mission To Examine Link Between Lightning And Terrestrial Gamma Ray Flashes
Published November 21, 2008, 3:16 pm, Science Daily
Massive energy releases occur every day in the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere. Lightning may give rise to these bursts of radiation. However, unlike the well-known flashes of light and peals of thunder familiar to Earth-dwellers, these energy releases are channeled upward and can be detected only from space. Our atmosphere protects us from the effects of this radiation, but the mechanisms ...
Gamma-Ray Evidence Suggests Ancient Mars Had Oceans
Published November 18, 2008, 4:02 pm, SpaceDaily
An international team of scientists who analyzed data from the Gamma Ray Spectrometer onboard NASA's Mars Odyssey reports new evidence for the controversial idea that oceans once covered about a third of ancient Mars. "We compared Gamma Ray Spectrometer data on potassium, thorium and iron above and below a shoreline believed to mark an ancient ocean that covered a third of Mars' surface ...
NSF/NASA 'Firefly' CubeSat Mission to Study Link Between Lightning and Terrestrial Gamma Ray Flashes
Published November 18, 2008, 12:28 pm, SpaceRef
A new nano satellite mission, called 'Firefly,' sponsored by the NSF and led by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center will explore the relationship between lightning and these sudden bursts, called Terrestrial Gamma Ray Flashes.
Firefly satellite will study thunderstorms
Published November 18, 2008, 10:05 am, ZDNet
The Firefly mission is the second project under the new U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) CubeSat program. The goal of this program is to provide a low cost access to space research. Firefly will be launched in 2010 or 2011 and will try to 'solve the mystery of the most powerful natural particle accelerator in Earth's atmosphere: TGFs, or terrestrial gamma-ray flashes,' according to a NSF ...
Terrestrial gamma rays in Earth's upper atmosphere linked to lightning
Published November 18, 2008, 6:17 am, New Kerala
Washington, Nov 18 : Scientists have theorized that massive energy releases known as 'terrestrial gamma rays', which occur every day in the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere, are linked to lightning and result when high-energy electrons are accelerated upward over thunderstorms.
More evidence points to past oceans on Mars
Published November 17, 2008, 4:26 pm, New Scientist
Chemical fingerprints in the soil suggest Mars may have had a succession of relatively short-lived oceans

- Chandra Press Room :: Searching for Primordial Antimatter :: 30 October 08: According to the Big Bang theory the new Universe contained a lot of anti-matter and slightly more matter (1 billionth) . After mutual annihilated matter was all that survived; however, in the first fraction of a second the Universe expanded so quickly that some anti-matter may have been moved out of range of matter and; thus, survives to this day. Trace amounts of antimatter may be produced by powerful phenomena such as relativistic jets powered by black holes and pulsars, but no evidence has yet been found for primordial ant-imatter produced by the Big Bang. Some might be separated on smaller scales, such as those of superclusters or clusters in which case collisions between two galaxy clusters, the largest gravitationall y-bound structures in the Universe. X-ray emission shows how much hot gas is involved in such a collision. If some of the gas from either cluster has particles of antimatter, then there will be annihilation and the X-rays will be accompanied by gamma rays.

- Nuclear materials detection safeguards ports: Since Sept. 11, 2001, concerns have been raised about how best to prevent dangerous materials or contraband items from being smuggled into the country alongside the millions of imported goods. In particular, homeland security and law enforcement professionals are most concerned about the potential for illicit radiological materials to make their way into the country through shipping ports.
